1:22FSD v14 Lite for Hardware 3: what older Teslas get, and what they never will
Tesla has started a wide rollout of FSD v14 Lite to cars with Hardware 3. It brings much of v14's smoother driving to older Model 3 and Model Y, but HW3 has reached its ceiling.
Owners of older Teslas with Hardware 3 (HW3) have watched newer cars get better versions of FSD for a long time. On July 21, Tesla began rolling out FSD v14 Lite to HW3 cars, and by July 23 the release went wide in the US and Canada.
What v14 Lite is
Tesla's newest FSD models are too large for the HW3 computer. v14 Lite is a 'distilled' version: Tesla trains a smaller model to mimic the behavior of the full HW4 version, including reinforcement learning techniques. The software version is 2026.20.6.11, the same build number HW4 cars get with FSD v14.3.6.
What improves
- Better handling of merges, forks, pedestrians, traffic lights and cars cutting in.
- Fewer unnecessary slowdowns, smoother steering and steadier lane centering.
- Parking, unparking and reversing on FSD.
- Arrival options: choose whether FSD parks in a lot, on the street, in a driveway or at the curb.
- A 'Start Self-Driving from Park' button, with the driver seated, belted and visible to the cabin camera.
- A new, even calmer 'Sloth' speed profile, below Chill.
Who gets it
At the start, the rollout covered HW3 Model 3 and Model Y in the US and Canada. HW3 Model S and Model X followed later in stages. European HW3 owners can only use it once FSD (Supervised) is approved in their country.
The ceiling
v14 Lite is expected to be the last major FSD branch for HW3. HW3 will not get unsupervised FSD or the coming v15. Tesla has promised hardware upgrades with newer AI chips for owners who bought FSD outright, but has not given a schedule.
Why it matters
There are millions of HW3 Teslas on the road. v14 Lite narrows the gap between old and new cars and keeps those owners in the FSD ecosystem while the upgrade question remains open.
