1:38How Tesla software updates work: version numbers, waves and why your neighbor got it first
Why does one Tesla get an update weeks before another? A plain guide to Tesla's version numbers, staged rollouts, the Advanced setting and what to do if an update fails.
Tesla cars get new software over the internet several times a month. For many owners, the system is a bit of a mystery: why does a friend's car get an update weeks earlier, and what do all those numbers mean? Here is a plain guide.
What the version number means
A version like 2026.38.5.1 reads as follows: 2026 is the year, 38 is roughly the week the software branch was created, and the numbers after that are later fixes on that branch. A higher number does not always mean more features; sometimes it is just a bug fix.
Why updates arrive in waves
Tesla never sends an update to every car at once. It starts with a small group, often employees and early-access testers, watches for problems, and then widens the rollout in waves. Which wave you are in depends on your model, hardware, region, and software you are currently on. Being late is not a sign that something is wrong with your car.
The 'Advanced' setting
Under Software in the car's settings, you can choose between Standard and Advanced. Advanced puts you in line for new releases sooner, but they may still have small bugs. It does not mean you get every update immediately.
Major vs minor updates
- Seasonal updates (Spring Update, Holiday Update) bring bundles of new features.
- Point releases fix bugs, improve security or add small changes.
- FSD updates often follow their own schedule and can depend on your hardware (HW3 or HW4).
Tips
- Connect the car to Wi-Fi at home; large updates download much faster and more reliably.
- Turn on automatic installation if you do not want to think about it; it was added with the Spring Update 2026.
- Read the release notes on the screen after an update; new features are often hidden in menus.
- If an installation fails, try again on Wi-Fi with enough charge; if it keeps failing, book a service appointment in the app.
Not every feature reaches every car
Some features depend on hardware, such as the newer AMD processor, HW4 or specific cameras. Others depend on local rules. The release notes in the car only show what applies to your car.
