Slovakia's transport ministry has recognized the Dutch approval of FSD (Supervised). Here is the updated list of EU countries and what still has to happen before an EU-wide decision.
Tesla's driver-assistance system keeps spreading across Europe one country at a time. On October 16, Slovakia's Ministry of Transport recognized the Dutch type approval for FSD (Supervised), making it the ninth EU country by the count of Tesla-focused media.
The list so far
- Netherlands (April 10, the original approval by the RDW)
- Lithuania
- Estonia
- Denmark
- Belgium
- Slovenia
- Czechia
- Croatia (late September)
- Slovakia (October 16)
How it works
Approval in Europe goes through a type approval. The Dutch vehicle authority RDW granted a preliminary approval in April, and other EU countries can choose to recognize it nationally. That is what Slovakia has done. Slovak transport minister Jozef Ráž had said on October 7 that the decision was days away.
What it is, and isn't
FSD (Supervised) is a driver-assistance system, not a self-driving car. The driver stays fully responsible, and the car monitors attention with the cabin camera. In most of Europe, Tesla now markets it as 'Assisted Driving' after talks with German authorities, although the Slovak statement used the FSD name.
What is still unknown
Tesla Europe said the rollout in Slovakia will start soon, but has not given a date, nor said which cars and software versions get it first.
The EU-wide decision
A vote on approval for the whole EU is not expected before December. Germany is pushing for a union-wide decision. Until then, approval continues country by country.
