1:09Tesla opens its Semi factory in Nevada and starts series deliveries
Nine years after its unveiling, the Tesla Semi is in series production. The new Nevada plant is built for up to 50,000 trucks a year, with Europe due in 2027.
Tesla officially opened its dedicated Semi factory in Nevada on September 24 and handed over series-production electric trucks to its first customers. It is a milestone for a product that was first shown in 2017 and reached a handful of customers at the end of 2022.
The factory
- Location: its own site near Gigafactory Nevada.
- Size: about 167,000 square meters.
- Capacity: designed for up to 50,000 trucks a year.
- Production start: the first Semi came off the line in April 2026.
One production line builds the Standard and Long Range versions, as well as a version intended for Europe.
Versions and prices
- Long Range: up to 500 miles (about 800 km) per charge, around $290,000.
- Standard Range: 325 miles (about 520 km), around $260,000.
Customers and orders
Around a dozen customers received trucks or handover documents at the event. Einride has ordered 500 Semis and IMC Logistics 50. A US purchasing alliance also picked Tesla as a main supplier in a tender for 2,500 electric heavy trucks, alongside other manufacturers, so Tesla's share of that number is unclear. Tesla did not disclose its total order book.
Europe
European deliveries are planned for 2027, initially built in Nevada. Musk has mentioned possible future production at the Grünheide plant near Berlin.
What to watch
The capacity is there; the question is how fast Tesla can fill it. According to its latest shareholder deck, high-volume production has slipped to 2027. Charging is the other piece: trucks this size need Megachargers along the routes they drive.
