Model Y Juniper vs the original Model Y: every difference that matters when you buy

Guides · September 27, 2026

The refreshed Model Y looks similar from a distance but changes a lot in daily use. Here is what is new, whether the older car is still a good buy, and why accessories often don't fit both.

The Model Y is the best-selling Tesla and, in many countries, the best-selling car of any kind. Since early 2025 it has come in a refreshed version, known by its project name 'Juniper'. If you are choosing between a new one and a used original (2020–2024), here is what changed.

Outside

  • A thin light bar across the front and a full-width light bar at the rear.
  • Slimmer headlights, new wheels and tires tuned for efficiency and lower noise.
  • A second front-facing camera in the bumper, which helps with parking.

Inside

  • Quieter: acoustic glass and other changes make a clear difference at highway speed.
  • Comfort: ventilated front seats and power-folding, power-reclining rear seats.
  • Rear screen: an 8-inch screen for rear passengers to control climate and entertainment.
  • Ambient lighting and a redesigned center console with two wireless phone chargers.

Driving

The suspension and steering were retuned. Most reviewers find the Juniper noticeably more comfortable over bumps, one of the main complaints about the original Model Y.

Safety and hardware

The Juniper adds extra airbags, including a far-side airbag for the driver. All Juniper cars have Hardware 4. Original Model Y cars built from 2023 onward may also have HW4, depending on factory and build date; older ones have HW3. Check under Settings, Software, Additional Vehicle Information.

Accessories: check before you buy

Because the interior was redesigned, many accessories made for the original Model Y do not fit the Juniper, and vice versa. That includes floor mats, center console organizers, screen protectors and some trunk liners. Always check that a product says 'Model Y 2025+' or 'Juniper' if you have the new one.

Is the original still a good buy?

Yes, if the price is right. A used 2022–2024 Model Y with HW4 offers most of the practicality and range for much less money. Choose the Juniper if comfort, noise and the latest hardware matter most to you.
