1:10Model Y beats the VW Golf: Tesla has Germany's best-selling car in September
With 8,038 registrations, the Model Y was the most popular new car in Germany in September. Tesla's German sales nearly quadrupled, helped by a new EV subsidy.
In the home country of Volkswagen, a Tesla was the best-selling new car in September. The Model Y recorded 8,038 registrations, ahead of the VW Golf with 6,580, according to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
The key numbers
- Model Y: 8,038, the best-selling car of any type, the top SUV and the top electric car. Its best month of 2026, beating March's 6,841.
- Model 3: 4,512, leader of the mid-size segment and sixth overall.
- Tesla total: 12,552 registrations, up 268.7% from a year earlier, for a 4.9% market share.
- Top EV brand: Tesla led all brands in electric registrations, ahead of VW (9,440) and Skoda (7,673).
A booming EV market
Germany registered a record 88,599 battery-electric cars in September, 34.5% of all new car registrations and almost double the level of a year ago. A new government EV subsidy, introduced in May, is a big part of the story. The Model Y is the most popular car under that program, with 8,297 approved applications as of October 1.
The year so far
Despite its strong September, the Model Y is second among electric cars in Germany this year, with 29,464 registrations, just behind the Skoda Elroq at 30,845.
Why it matters
Germany is Europe's biggest car market and was one of Tesla's weakest spots in 2025. A month in which the Model Y outsells the Golf is symbolic, and shows how quickly demand can return when prices and incentives line up. The question now is whether Tesla can keep that pace outside quarter-end months.
