1:19Tesla delivers 486,532 cars in Q3 2026, beating Wall Street's estimate by 24,500
Deliveries were slightly lower than a year ago but well above what analysts expected, and Tesla sold more cars than it built. Energy storage was the weak spot.
Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, the company reported on October 2. That is 2.1% fewer than the record 497,099 of a year earlier, but comfortably ahead of what analysts had expected.
The numbers
- Deliveries: 486,532, up 1.3% from 480,126 in Q2.
- Analyst consensus: 461,974 (compiled by Tesla from 24 analysts), so the beat was about 24,500 cars.
- Production: 464,391, about 22,000 fewer than deliveries.
- Year to date: 1,324,681 deliveries, up 8.8%.
By model
The Model 3 and Model Y accounted for 478,237 deliveries. All other models together, which now means the Cybertruck, the Semi and the last Model S and Model X cars from inventory, delivered 8,295, down 48% from a year earlier. With the Model S and X out of production since April, Tesla is now almost entirely a two-model company.
Inventory came down again
For the second quarter in a row, Tesla sold more cars than it built. That has now worked off the roughly 50,000 extra vehicles produced in the first quarter, which is healthy for pricing.
What drove the beat
High gasoline prices in the US helped offset the loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, while strong exports from Shanghai made up for weak retail sales inside China.
The weak spot: energy
Energy storage deployments came in at 13.7 GWh, up 9.6% from a year earlier but below the roughly 15.9 GWh analysts expected and below the record 14.2 GWh of Q4 2025.
What to watch
Volume is not profit. In Q2, Tesla missed profit expectations even though deliveries were solid. The earnings report on October 21 will show whether this quarter's volume came with healthy margins.
