Tesla Solar Roof is gone: what replaced it, and what Tesla solar looks like now

Energy · October 21, 2026

Tesla quietly ended its solar roof tiles in August. Its own 420-watt panels and Powerwall 3 are now the core offer. Here is what changed and what it means if you want Tesla solar.

The Tesla Solar Roof, the glass roof tiles with built-in solar cells that Elon Musk unveiled in 2016, is no more. Tesla quietly ended the product in August 2026. Its place has been taken by something far more ordinary: Tesla's own solar panels, paired with the Powerwall 3 home battery.

How the end came out

Tesla never made a formal announcement. Around August 20, a certified Solar Roof installer posted on X that the product was discontinued, then deleted the post. A Tesla vice president wrote that it had been a great run and referred to a next chapter. Tesla then removed Solar Roof from the energy menu on its website, and the old product page now redirects to the solar panels page.

Why it ended

The Solar Roof never reached the scale Musk had in mind. By the end of 2022, it had only around 3,000 installations in the US, a tiny fraction of the residential solar market. The main problem: installing it meant replacing your entire roof, which made projects complex, slow and expensive.

What Tesla sells now

  • 420-watt solar panel: launched in January 2026 and assembled at Tesla's factory in Buffalo, New York, the same plant that used to make the roof tiles. Tesla calls it the first panel it fully designed and built itself, with an all-black look and better performance in partial shade.
  • Powerwall 3: a home battery with a built-in inverter. Tesla's design tool now suggests solar plus Powerwall as a bundle by default, although solar-only is still possible.
  • Installers: since late 2024, Tesla has largely moved away from its own installation crews and works with certified installers, of which it reports more than 7,000 in over 35 countries.

For existing Solar Roof owners

Tesla has not explained how service and warranty will be handled now that the product is discontinued. If you have a Solar Roof, keep your warranty documents and installer details safe, and contact Tesla Energy support if anything goes wrong.

The bigger picture

Tesla's energy business is booming, but not because of rooftops. In 2025, energy revenue grew 27% to $12.8 billion, driven mostly by large battery systems such as Megapack. For homeowners, Tesla now competes as a panel-and-battery supplier like many others; its strongest card is the Powerwall and how it works with a Tesla car and app.
