Tesla has its best month ever in Europe: September registrations up 72.5%, Model Y and Model 3 finish one-two

Official ACEA figures show 68,776 new Teslas registered across Europe in September 2026, beating BYD for the month. Model Y and Model 3 were the continent's two best-selling cars.

After two difficult years in Europe, Tesla has just posted its strongest month there. Figures from the European carmakers' association ACEA, published on Thursday, October 22, show 68,776 new Teslas registered across the EU, the EFTA countries and the UK in September 2026. That is 72.5% more than in September 2025, and industry trackers and Automotive News describe it as Tesla's highest monthly total in Europe to date.

The key numbers

  • Europe-wide (EU + EFTA + UK): 68,776 registrations in September, up from 39,866. Tesla's market share rose from 3.2% to 5.0%.
  • EU only: 45,866 registrations, up 78.6%, for a 4.7% share.
  • First nine months: 260,575 Teslas across Europe, 50% more than the 173,719 of January to September 2025.
  • Total market: overall new-car registrations grew 10.2% Europe-wide in September, so Tesla grew roughly seven times faster than the market.

Battery-electric cars as a whole are surging too. In the EU, about 290,000 of the roughly 971,000 new cars registered in September were fully electric, close to 30%. Over the year so far, the EU electric share stands at 22.7%.

Model Y and Model 3 at the top

The model-level picture is just as striking. According to data compiled by Best Selling Cars Blog, which uses a slightly different market scope than ACEA, the Model Y was Europe's best-selling car in September with almost 41,000 units, and the Model 3 came second with just over 25,000. It is the first time since December 2022 that Tesla has taken both top spots. The Model Y is now also Europe's best-selling car for the year to date.

Part of that strength fits Tesla's usual quarterly rhythm: the last month of a quarter is when most ships from Shanghai and cars from Giga Berlin are delivered. The cheaper Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard have also widened the range of buyers Tesla can reach.

BYD still leads the year

Tesla's biggest rival in Europe's EV market is no longer a European brand. BYD registered 49,953 cars across Europe in September, nearly double its total a year ago, so Tesla beat it comfortably for the month. Over nine months, however, BYD is still ahead with 283,997 registrations against Tesla's 260,575, after growth of 134.6%. Other Chinese brands, including SAIC's MG, Leapmotor and the Chery group, also grew quickly, while the Volkswagen Group's registrations fell 2.9% in September.

Why it matters

Europe was one of Tesla's weakest regions in 2024 and 2025, hit by an ageing line-up, fierce Chinese competition and a backlash against Elon Musk's politics. This year's rebound is now clear in official data, not just in individual national figures. It also stands out against Tesla's global picture: worldwide deliveries fell 2% in the third quarter to 486,532, which means sales outside Europe were weaker.

On its earnings call on October 21, Tesla said battery cell supply is currently limiting how many cars it can sell. If that is true, strong European demand may push Tesla to send more of its constrained supply here rather than to slower markets.

There are caveats. Analysts quoted by Reuters earlier this month expect Tesla's European growth to slow in 2027 to roughly the pace of the overall market, and note that rivals have launched dozens of new electric models in Europe this year while Tesla has added none. Much of the comparison is also flattered by a weak 2025.

What to watch next

  • October figures: the first month of a quarter is usually much quieter for Tesla in Europe, so a drop from September would be normal. The year-on-year comparison is the better test.
  • The BYD race: Tesla needs to close a gap of about 23,000 registrations in the last three months to finish 2026 ahead of BYD in Europe.
  • FSD in Europe: Musk now hopes for EU-wide approval of supervised FSD by the first quarter of 2027, which could become an extra selling point.
