What happened to xAI? How Grok's maker became SpaceXAI in 2026

xAI / Grok · October 23, 2026

In one year xAI was bought by SpaceX, lost its separate identity, bought Cursor and was renamed twice. A timeline, and what it means for Grok in your Tesla.

If you use Grok in a Tesla, the company behind it has changed more in 2026 than the assistant itself. xAI, the AI start-up Elon Musk founded in 2023, no longer exists as an independent company. It is now the artificial intelligence division of SpaceX. Here is how that happened.

The timeline

  • March 2023: Musk founds xAI with a small team of researchers. The Grok chatbot follows in November 2023.
  • March 2025: xAI takes over X, the former Twitter, in an all-stock deal. Both end up under one holding company.
  • February 2, 2026: SpaceX acquires xAI, again paying in shares. SpaceX is valued at about $1 trillion and xAI at about $250 billion.
  • May 2026: Musk says xAI will stop being a separate company; Grok and X become part of SpaceX's AI division.
  • June 2026: SpaceX goes public on Nasdaq.
  • July 2026: the AI business is renamed SpaceXAI.
  • August 2026: SpaceX completes its all-stock purchase of Cursor, the AI coding tool, for about $60 billion.
  • October 2026: the company's X account is renamed SpaceX Super Intelligence, and SpaceX now reports AI as its own business segment.

Why SpaceX wanted it

Training and running large AI models needs enormous amounts of computing power and money. SpaceX has both a cash machine in Starlink and access to the capital markets since its listing. On its third-quarter call, SpaceX said its AI segment added about $6.7 billion of revenue compared with a year earlier, driven by cloud computing deals, the Cursor purchase and Grok products, and that its installed computing capacity reached 1.7 gigawatts at the end of September. Musk also floated a very ambitious target for AI revenue by the end of 2027; that is a projection, not a result.

The turbulence along the way

The transition was not smooth. By late March 2026 all of xAI's co-founders had left, and a Starlink executive, Michael Nicolls, became president in April. Grok has faced criticism for offensive answers and for generating sexual deepfakes, and the Colossus data centres in Memphis and nearby Southaven, Mississippi, face lawsuits over gas turbines and noise.

What it means for Tesla drivers

For now, nothing visible changes in the car. Grok still arrives through Tesla software updates, and Tesla decides which features it gets. Two things are worth knowing, though. First, Grok in your Tesla is now a SpaceX product, which ties Tesla's in-car AI to a company Tesla is studying a merger with. Second, Tesla owns a small piece of SpaceX after its $2 billion xAI investment was converted into SpaceX shares. If the two companies ever combine, the line between Tesla's own AI and SpaceX's would disappear altogether.

What to watch

SpaceX said its enterprise assistant Grok Bot should be widely available within weeks. Whether more of that capability flows into Tesla cars, and on what terms, is the open question for Tesla shareholders.
