3 minTesla Powerwall 3 goes on sale in Japan, with subsidy registration and installs from autumn
Tesla has started selling the Powerwall 3 home battery in Japan. The 13.5 kWh unit delivers 9.69 kW, is registered for government subsidies and should be installed from September or October.
Tesla's newest home battery has reached Japan. On August 3, 2026, Tesla Japan began taking orders for the Powerwall 3, according to Japanese tech outlets Kaden Watch and Impress Watch. Customers can apply through Tesla's Japanese website, after which a Tesla-certified sales and installation company in their region gets in touch. The first installations are expected from September or October.
What Japanese buyers get
The Japanese Powerwall 3 is a hybrid unit: it has a built-in solar power conditioner, so rooftop panels can connect to it directly. It can also be installed as a standalone battery next to an existing solar system. The key figures reported for the Japanese version:
- Storage: 13.5 kWh.
- Output: 9.69 kW rated, also during backup. That is almost double the 5 kW of the Powerwall 2.
- Efficiency: 97.5% from solar DC to household AC.
- Size and weight: 1,105 x 609 x 193 mm and 130 kg, for indoor or outdoor use, on the floor or on a wall.
- Durability: rated for -20 to 50 °C, water up to 60 cm from the base, dust and heavy salt exposure. The salt rating matters in a country with a lot of coastline.
- Warranty: 10 years.
The output figure is lower than the 11.5 kW Tesla quotes for the top US configuration, which reflects Japan's different grid setup. Tesla has not published a Japanese price, and none of the launch reports included one.
Certified for Japan's subsidy system
The most important detail for Japanese buyers may be paperwork rather than hardware. The Powerwall 3 has been certified to the Japanese standards JIS C 4412 and JIS C 8715-2, to the JC-STAR IoT security label and to ECHONET Lite, the communication standard Japanese homes use to connect smart appliances. It is also registered with SII, the organisation whose product list many national and local subsidy schemes require.
That opens the door to grants. Impress Watch gives Tokyo as an example, where the current programme for the 2026 fiscal year offers up to 1.2 million yen towards equipment and installation. Rules and amounts differ by municipality, so buyers have to check what applies where they live.
How Tesla prepared the launch
Tesla had been preparing this market for months. In June it held information sessions for companies that want to become certified Powerwall 3 sales and installation partners: two online sessions on June 18 and 19, and two in-person sessions on June 23 and 24 at its Shinjuku store in Tokyo. Like in Europe, Tesla relies on these partners to install the batteries, while customers order and monitor them through the Tesla app.
The battery comes with Tesla Home, the energy management software that uses Tesla's "Opticaster" AI to decide when to charge and discharge, based on weather, household demand and electricity price forecasts. Impress Watch notes that Tesla began selling an earlier Powerwall in Japan through the electronics chain Yamada Denki in October 2024.
Why it matters
Japan is a natural market for home batteries. It is prone to earthquakes and typhoons that can knock out power, many homes have rooftop solar, and local governments actively subsidise storage. A battery with almost twice the output of its predecessor can keep more of a house running during an outage, including larger appliances.
For Tesla, Japan adds another country to the Powerwall 3 rollout, which so far has focused on North America, Australia and Europe. Tesla says more than one million Powerwalls have been installed worldwide.
What to watch for next
- Pricing: whether Tesla or its partners publish prices, and how they compare with Japanese rivals once subsidies are deducted.
- First installations: whether the September to October target holds.
- Partner network: how quickly Tesla signs up installers outside the big cities.
