Three in four new Teslas now come with FSD: how Full Self-Driving became a subscription business

FSD ·

More than 75% of Tesla's Q3 deliveries in North America included FSD, and active users hit a record 1.74 million. Here is what changed, what the numbers mean, and how far Tesla is from its 10 million goal.

For years, Full Self-Driving was an expensive option that most Tesla buyers skipped. That has changed fast. In its third-quarter 2026 results on October 21, Tesla said more than 75% of new cars delivered in North America came with FSD (Supervised), either bought or subscribed. One quarter earlier, that share was about 55%.

The key numbers

  • 1.74 million active FSD users worldwide at the end of Q3, a record.
  • Up 67% in a year, from 1.04 million in Q3 2025.
  • About 260,000 added in one quarter, up from 1.48 million at the end of Q2. Tesla says no quarter has ever added more.
  • North American take rate: over 75% of Q3 deliveries, versus about 55% in Q2.

One note on the definition: the 1.74 million includes owners who paid for FSD up front in the past, not only monthly subscribers. In Q2, Tesla said roughly 55% of active users were buyers and 45% subscribers.

What changed: no more buying it outright

The biggest driver is a pricing switch. In January, Elon Musk announced that the one-time FSD purchase would end, and after February 14, 2026, standard FSD in the US became a $99 per month subscription. The last upfront price was $8,000, down from a peak of $15,000 in 2022. Top versions of the Model S, Model X and Cybertruck Cyberbeast still include lifetime FSD in a premium package, and some markets kept a purchase option a little longer.

That lowers the barrier. Instead of an $8,000 decision at the moment of purchase, buyers can add FSD for the price of a streaming bundle and cancel later. At $99 a month, it would take about six and a half years of payments to reach the old purchase price.

Tesla also credits the product itself. FSD v14 on newer cars, and the lighter v14 version for older Hardware 3 cars, have added features such as starting from park and choosing where the car parks on arrival. Musk summed up his view on X: people are buying 'FSD with a car attached'.

Why it matters for Tesla's money

Software has much higher margins than hardware. Tesla's overall gross margin rose to 19.6% in Q3, from 18.0% a year earlier, and the company pointed to higher sales of extras, led by FSD subscriptions, as one reason. In its outlook, Tesla said it expects software and fleet-based profits to grow over time alongside car sales.

Subscriptions also make income more predictable. A buyer who paid $8,000 once brings in nothing more, while a subscriber pays every month for as long as they keep the service.

The 10 million question

FSD is also tied to Musk's pay. One of the milestones in his 2025 performance award is 10 million active FSD subscriptions, held for three months in a row; past purchases count toward that number. At 1.74 million, Tesla is a little over a sixth of the way there. Adding 260,000 a quarter would take years to close the gap, so Tesla needs FSD to keep accelerating, and to win approval in more countries.

Europe and the caveats

In Europe, the system is now marketed as 'Tesla Assisted Driving'. It is approved in nine EU countries, where Tesla says more than 100,000 customers have driven over 160 million kilometers with it. An EU-wide vote is expected in December at the earliest.

Some caution is useful. Tesla has not published a take rate outside North America, a subscriber count by region, or how many people cancel after a month. FSD (Supervised) also still requires an attentive driver at all times.

What to watch

Whether the take rate holds once the first wave of curious subscribers has tried it, whether Tesla raises the $99 price as FSD improves, and the arrival of FSD v15, which Tesla expects late this year or early next year. Tesla's fourth-quarter report early next year will show whether 75% was a peak or a new normal.
