3 minTesla builds its 10 millionth car, a Model Y from Fremont, six years after its first million
A Diamond Black Model Y from the Fremont Factory in California is Tesla's 10 millionth vehicle. The first million took 12 years; the next nine million took just over six.
Tesla has built its 10 millionth vehicle. The company said on X on July 30 that the car, a new Model Y in Diamond Black, came off the line at its Fremont Factory in California this week. Tesla pointed out that the same plant built its one millionth car only six years ago.
Elon Musk congratulated the team and called 10 million cars "an incredible amount of work". Workers in Fremont marked the moment on the factory floor, and teams at other Tesla plants posted messages of their own.
The key numbers
- First million: about 12 years, counting from the first Roadster in 2008 to the one millionth car in Fremont in March 2020.
- Next nine million: just over six years.
- Last step: the 9 millionth car, a Model Y from Giga Shanghai, was built in late December 2025. The 10 millionth followed about 209 days later.
- Pace: the last two million-car steps each took roughly seven months, which works out to around 4,800 cars a day across all plants.
Four factories, one count
The 10 million cars were built at four assembly plants: Fremont, Giga Shanghai, Giga Texas near Austin and Giga Berlin near Berlin. The milestones moved between them as the network grew:
- 1 million: March 2020, Fremont.
- 4 million: March 2023, Giga Texas.
- 5 million: September 2023, Giga Shanghai.
- 6 and 7 million: March and October 2024, both Fremont.
- 8 million: June 2025, Giga Berlin.
- 9 million: December 2025, Giga Shanghai.
- 10 million: July 2026, Fremont.
The Model Y makes up most of that total. It has been Tesla's best-selling car for years and is built in all four plants.
Why Fremont, again
Fremont is where Tesla's car business really started. The company took over most of the former GM and Toyota plant in 2010, paying Toyota $42 million. The first Model S customers picked up their cars there in June 2012. Model X followed in 2015, Model 3 in 2017 and Model Y in January 2020.
The plant is changing. Production of the Model S and Model X ended earlier this year, and their lines are being taken out to make room for Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot. That leaves Model 3 and Model Y as Fremont's cars. Building the 10 millionth vehicle there is a reminder that the oldest factory still matters, even as newer plants in Shanghai, Texas and Berlin take a bigger share of the work.
Context: a better year so far
The milestone comes as Tesla's sales recover. In the second quarter of 2026 Tesla produced 451,758 cars and delivered a record 480,126 for a second quarter, its first year-on-year rise in quarterly deliveries after two years of declines.
Tesla's factories can build more than they currently do. Installed capacity is above 2.35 million cars a year, but executives have said shortages of batteries and electronic parts are holding output back.
What to watch next
- 11 million: if the current pace holds, the next million could arrive around the first quarter of 2027.
- Fremont's next chapter: how fast the former Model S and X space turns into an Optimus production line, and whether robots become the plant's next milestone.
- Supply limits: whether Tesla can ease the battery and chip constraints that keep its plants below full capacity.
For comparison: Tesla needed until 2020 to build its first million cars. It now builds a million roughly every seven months.
